The Village Board in Lake George is set to announce a moratorium on new water hookups for commercial properties outside of the village. This is to allow for a 10- to 12-week study on the village’s water system. The resolution will be voted on in December, and the moratorium is proposed to last for six months.
The decision to conduct the study was influenced by Richard Schermerhorn’s housing development plans for the former site of Water Slide World. The village wants to ensure they can meet the water volume needed for large projects like this.
The village’s water filtration system currently serves over 1,800 residents and businesses in the town and village of Lake George. However, with the growing development in the area, a study is being conducted to explore options to continue providing water services. Both the town and village operate their own water filtration plants, but the town’s facility in Diamond Point serves a smaller population.
The village supplies water to Hearthstone Park on Route 9N up to Route 9L, as well as the east side of the lake. The recent conversion of the old Ramada Inn into residences and other condo developments on Route 9L and Bloody Pond Road has also prompted the need for the water study.
The village and town boards have joined forces to finance a $43,000 study that will examine the current capacity of the system, identify any concerns or limitations, and propose improvement designs to accommodate future growth. The aim is to accommodate all customers seeking village water while maintaining an adequate reserve for the village.
The study is expected to take 12-14 weeks, and the village officials are eager to continue serving the growing town of Lake George without hindering its development.
