In the realm of diplomacy – cultivating valuable relationships – the meeting between the prince and the president-elect was a significant achievement for British diplomats.
Back in 2016, when Donald Trump first became US president, many countries, including Britain, were unprepared. Diplomatic contacts with Mr. Trump’s transition team were lacking.
However, this time around, things have changed. British ambassador Karen Pierce and her team in Washington have built strong ties with the Trump team, establishing close contacts with key members over several months.
The British embassy staff, along with diplomats from other nations, have been in West Palm Beach, Florida, participating in meetings with Mr. Trump’s team and gathering insights on the current political landscape.
The meeting in Paris between Prince William and Mr. Trump was arranged through connections nurtured in Florida over the past few months.
Before the meeting, the prince, who represented Britain at the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, would have been briefed by British diplomats on key talking points and strategic issues.
The post-meeting debriefing was equally crucial.
Royal influence can be impactful
While the Royal Family does not shape British foreign policy, their soft power can be influential.
The British wagered that Mr. Trump would appreciate being hosted by a prince in what is considered Britain’s finest embassy.

It’s known that Mr. Trump appreciates flattery, grandeur, and pomp, evident in the dramatic handshake during the meeting.
This gesture aligned with his persona: asserting authority and control even as a guest. French diplomats in Washington have also been actively engaged.
President Macron sought to invite Mr. Trump to Paris, starting with an inquiry from the Elysee Palace to the French ambassador in Washington, who then initiated contact with Mr. Trump’s team.
The efforts to secure meetings with Mr. Trump and offer invitations aim to cater to his significant global influence even before assuming office on January 20.
His actions and words hold sway due to the current state of the world and his leadership style.
