Sir Keir Starmer has expressed optimism for a “better, brighter future” in his inaugural Christmas message as prime minister.
His message, coming nearly six months into his tenure, aims to uplift spirits amidst criticism of his party’s economic management and the country’s direction under his leadership.
Emphasizing the importance of looking after one another, Sir Keir’s message also extends well wishes for peace in the Middle East.
Sir Keir remarked: “This Christmas is a time for travel, as people journey across the country to be with loved ones and celebrate the hope and joy of the season.
“It’s a time to reflect on what truly matters: family, friendship, and unity among all individuals.
“Standing by each other – in times of celebration and during challenges.”
The prime minister further expressed gratitude towards those dedicating their Christmas to serving others, such as healthcare professionals, emergency responders, members of the Armed Forces, and charitable organizations.
“Recognizing that this can be a challenging time for many, my thoughts are with those feeling lonely or missing loved ones this Christmas. You are not alone.
“As Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Christmas tale reminds us to reach out, to care, and to support one another.
“This Christmas, my hopes are for peace, particularly in the Middle East, the setting of the Christmas narrative.
“I look ahead to a more hopeful and brighter future for all, celebrating the joy and marvel that Christmas brings.
“So, from my family to yours, I wish you a very merry Christmas.”

Having cared for his ill mother during his upbringing, he endeavored to raise awareness for young carers through a Christmas song campaign.
