Johnson’s Reward as Speaker: An Impossible Job Delivering for Trump

Shortly after Speaker Mike Johnson secured his re-election on Friday, conservative lawmakers sent him a letter that was far from congratulatory. They expressed their support for President Trump as the reason for voting for him, despite their reservations about his track record over the past 15 months. The ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus listed three major complaints about Mr. Johnson and demanded seven policy changes. Representative Mark Amodei commented that intramural wrestling matches may become the norm in the 119th Congress.

As Mr. Johnson faces his toughest challenge yet with the enormous domestic agenda of President-elect Donald J. Trump at stake, he is tasked with pushing through economic plans and handling a mercurial president who is known for making last-minute demands. With a shrinking majority and high expectations for what can be accomplished with total Republican control, Mr. Johnson is in a delicate position.

Representative Carlos Gimenez emphasized the difficulty of the tasks ahead but stressed the need to accomplish them for the American people. Expectations are high for Mr. Johnson to deliver on Mr. Trump’s agenda, setting the stage for a looming fight over tax, budget, and immigration legislation.

The House Freedom Caucus demanded that any bill not increase federal borrowing without agreed-upon spending cuts in place. This demand, along with others, is likely to lead to a contentious battle among House Republicans over structuring Mr. Trump’s proposed legislation.

The demands from the House Freedom Caucus are expected to spark conflict within the party over how to handle Mr. Trump’s legislative priorities, especially given the significant costs involved. Mainstream conservatives have expressed frustration with their hard-line colleagues, setting the stage for a potentially challenging path forward.

The obstacles posed by hard-line conservatives within the party will make Mr. Johnson’s task of uniting Republicans behind Mr. Trump’s agenda even more difficult. Despite initial opposition, lawmakers like Representative Ralph Norman are hopeful that their concerns about the tax and budget bill have been acknowledged.
