Director Joe Wright on ‘global problem’ of fascism and what can be learnt from ‘deeply flawed’ Mussolini | Ents & Arts News

British director Joe Wright expressed his views on fascism, stating that it is a “global problem” with traces of the ideology “within us all”. Known for films like Darkest Hour and Atonement, Wright described fascism as the “politicization of toxic masculinity” that is present universally.

In an interview with Sky News’ Barbara Serra, ahead of the release of his new series, Mussolini: Son Of The Century, which focuses on the rise of the Italian dictator, Wright mentioned his interest in exploring history to comprehend the meaning of fascism better.

Discussing his perspective on the term, Wright said, “Growing up in the 80s, the word fascist was thrown around, but I didn’t truly grasp its significance. With the recent rise of the far right globally, I felt compelled to delve into the origins and meaning of the word.”

Defined as an “extreme right-wing, authoritarian system of government with intolerant views or practices” by dictionaries, fascism originated from Benito Mussolini’s movement in Italy and influenced fascist movements globally during the interwar period.

When questioned about the current understanding of fascism, Wright highlighted a resurgence of popularism and far-right populism. Mussolini: Son Of The Century portrays the dictator’s journey from establishing the Fasci Italiani organization post-World War I to his infamous parliament speech in 1925 after the murder of socialist Giacomo Matteotti.

Featuring Luca Marinelli as Mussolini, the series is an adaptation of Italian writer Antonio Scurati’s bestselling drama M. Son of the Century.

Author Antonio Scurati shed light on his novels’ popularity concerning the dictator, attributing it to the narrative being from Mussolini’s viewpoint. He stated, “To understand fascism deeply, we must acknowledge the fascist within us.”

Mussolini: Son Of The Century is set to premiere on 4 February exclusively on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.

Scurati emphasized the lingering elements of fascism, noting that it prevails when “fear overshadows the hope of democracy.” He reiterated that Mussolini mastered the politics of fear, transitioning from a party of hope to one of fear.

In agreement with Scurati, Wright acknowledged the emotional sensitivity surrounding Italy’s fascist history, agreeing that there is a “sense of fascism within all of us.” He added, “Fascism is a politicization of toxic masculinity present universally.”

When asked to describe the Mussolini in the series, Wright simply stated, “A deeply flawed human being.”

Mussolini: Son Of The Century will debut on 4 February exclusively on Sky Atlantic and stream on NOW in the UK.
