The US is advocating for Ukraine to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections, as stated by Keith Kellogg, President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg mentioned that the elections could occur by the end of the year, particularly if a truce with Russia was established, emphasizing the necessity of holding such votes.
“Most democratic nations hold elections even during times of war. I believe it is crucial for them to do so,” stated Kellogg in an interview with Reuters. He further added, “I believe it is beneficial for democracy. That’s the essence of a robust democracy, where multiple candidates can potentially run.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine cautioned against excluding Ukraine from US-Russia talks, stating it could pose risks for all parties involved. Prior to his presidency, Donald Trump claimed he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within a day. Both Trump and Kellogg are currently working on a plan to negotiate an end to the conflict initiated by Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
Zelenskyy’s term, scheduled to end in 2024, faces obstacles due to martial law imposed in February 2022. Discussions regarding elections have been raised by US officials with Zelenskyy’s office, with Ukrainian authorities expressing concerns about holding elections amidst ongoing volatility.
As the conflict persists, reports of continued fighting and casualties emerge. Recent drone and missile strikes by Russia on Ukraine resulted in multiple casualties and extensive damages to infrastructure and residential areas.
