Apple gambles on AI features at lower cost

Apple has introduced a new iPhone with artificial intelligence (AI) features at a lower price compared to its flagship models.

The iPhone 16e shares the same processor as the larger iPhone 16 and offers similar storage options, but with lower specifications in other areas, such as fewer cameras.

In an effort to reignite consumer interest after declining iPhone sales, Apple hopes that enhancing AI capabilities in a more affordable phone will help boost sales, although analysts remain cautious about the impact of such tools.

The name of the iPhone 16e pays homage to the iPhone SE series, released between 2016 and 2022 at significantly lower prices.

Apple has announced that the iPhone 16e will be available for pre-order in 59 countries starting from February 21.

Priced at £599 in the UK, the iPhone 16e is £200 less expensive than the iPhone 16 but more than double the launch price of the original iPhone SE in 2016.

Industry analyst Paolo Pescatore described the iPhone 16e as one of the most affordable powerful iPhones on the market, highlighting its potential to drive sales and attract users from competitor devices.

Much of the discussion around the new handset is expected to focus on its performance, as Apple has opted for the same A18 chip used in its more expensive devices.

With capabilities to run the same games and apps as other iPhones, the iPhone 16e is likely to prioritize AI functionalities.

Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized the performance, intelligence, and privacy features of the iPhone 16e, highlighting the AI capabilities designed to enhance user productivity and self-expression.

Introducing Apple Intelligence features, the series includes new tools for writing and integrates OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT into Siri.

Apple touts its new phone as “built for Apple Intelligence” with features like photo organization and search tools within the image library.
