France needs to sort its political mess – or populist winds blowing from the US will strengthen | Politics News

Reflecting on the impact of President Trump’s return, it is evident that the outcomes of leadership elections in major nations carry significance for the global community.

Within the G7 nations, which are considered wealthy, industrialized democracies, Italy’s election of Giorgia Meloni in 2022 marked a notable shift towards the far-right. Meloni not only became Italy’s first female leader but also the first from a neo-fascist party since Mussolini’s era.

The entries of Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer altered the political landscape in the US and the UK last year. Germany also saw the election of a more hawkish chancellor-in-waiting this spring.

The next potentially transformative election within what was once known as the “Western alliance” is not expected for another two years.

France is scheduled to elect a new president to succeed Emmanuel Macron in the summer of 2027. The electoral process is already marred by disruption, political conflicts, legal disputes, and populism akin to the turmoil witnessed in the US and Europe.

Recent developments saw French judges impose a ban on the frontrunner for the presidency for the next five years, potentially eliminating Marine Le Pen from the race.

The uncertainty prevailing in French politics is palpable, with even Le Pen, the leader of the far-right Rassemblement National (RN), unsure of what lies ahead.

Following a deep contemplation by a panel of three judges, Le Pen and nine former RN MEPs were convicted of illegally diverting around €4.4m of funds from the European Parliament for political purposes in France, rather than personal gain.

Le Pen was sentenced to a five-year ban and four years in prison, with the possibility of house arrest with an ankle monitor once the appeals process concludes. All this has stirred a wave of unrest in French politics.

Marine Le Pen hits out at ban

Incidents of high-profile figures facing legal repercussions in France are not uncommon. However, the immediate ban on Le Pen’s political future, starting this week, has sparked controversy.

Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, her deputy at RN, protested against the ban, likening it to a “nuclear bomb” and a “political death sentence”. The unfolding drama is causing upheaval within French politics.

The ban was imposed under the judgment of Chief Judge Benedicte de Perthuis, eliciting concern even from Prime Minister Francois Bayrou. With political tensions escalating, RN holds the potential to disrupt the government, being the largest party in the Assembly but kept out of power by a coalition.

Populist leaders both in Europe and the US rushed to support Marine Le Pen amid the controversy. Matteo Salvini in Italy, Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, and Vladimir Putin‘s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denounced the perceived violation of democratic norms. Hungary’s Viktor Orban echoed support for Le Pen, underscoring the populist sentiments prevailing across nations.

Trump himself voiced his opinion, denouncing the treatment of Le Pen as yet another instance of leftist manipulation through legal means, drawing parallels to his own experiences.

Le Pen’s call for stringent measures against corrupt politicians from other factions is being met with allegations of hypocrisy and “Trumpism” in France.

Mainstream commentators speculate that RN’s reaction might jeopardize Le Pen’s efforts to portray her party in a more respectable light, notably through her ‘wear a neck-tie strategy’ aimed at distancing from her father’s Front National’s extremist image.

Le Pen leaves court after guilty verdict

The intertwining of justice and politics in France is becoming increasingly evident, with Le Pen’s candidacy suspension generating further ambiguities. This development has sparked outrage among her supporters and confusion among her adversaries.

The internal dynamics of the far-right in France mirror those in other parts of the world – marked by internal conflicts and power struggles.

The intellectual Eric Zemmour, who secured the fourth position in the previous presidential election in 2022, is now at odds with Marion Marechal-Le Pen, Marine Le Pen’s niece and former supporter. The diverging paths of these figures may lead to separate bids to represent the far-right ideology.

As Macron stands tall on the international stage while facing domestic unpopularity, the French political landscape is poised for significant shifts leading up to the 2027 elections.

It remains unclear who will emerge as a strong contender for the presidency, with potential candidates from diverse political spectrums vying for leadership roles.

Current Prime Minister Bayrou and former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe are anticipated to target the center-right vote, while Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau could emerge as a strong candidate for the Gaullist Les Republicains party.

In the upcoming election, the positioning of Jean-Luc Melenchon from the hard-left La France Insoumise holds potential to shape the final contenders, with the Socialist party aiming to realign for a stronger presence in the political landscape.

The political scenario in France is indeed in a state of disarray, with effective leadership crucial for both the nation and Europe as a whole. The abrupt suspension of Marine Le Pen’s candidacy has only fostered uncertainty, leaving both supporters and opponents in a state of bewilderment.

While the French establishment anticipates a resolution, the unfolding events in France may well amplify the populist sentiments sweeping across the continent and the US.
