Discovering Bora Bora: A Travel Enthusiast’s Take

I’ve been fortunate enough to wander through over 40 countries. From savoring breakfast with breathtaking views of the Amalfi coastline in Positano to exploring the vibrant souks of Marrakech and even trekking to the secluded beauty of Alphonse Island in the Seychelles, my travel experiences have painted vivid memories in my mind. However, none prepared me for the magnetic allure of Bora Bora.

The Moment of Arrival

As my plane descended, revealing that astonishing lagoon, a shade of turquoise so vibrant it seemed surreal, I was rendered speechless. The sight of Mount Otemanu jutting prominently against the horizon can’t be captured in photos or travel blogs; it must be experienced. Days later, I still found myself pausing, starkly aware of the paradise around me.

Getting There

Reaching Bora Bora is an experience in itself. You first arrive in Tahiti and then board a brief but scenic flight with Air Moana to Bora Bora. What’s enchanting is the airport located right at the water’s edge. You step off the plane onto a dock, where a charming boat greets you, whisking you straight to your resort—such a seamless transition into paradise.

Where to Stay

We opted for the Westin Bora Bora, recently renovated to offer luxurious overwater bungalows, with our two-bedroom suite costing approximately $3,500 per night. Yes, it’s an investment, but when compared to the Four Seasons at around $12,000 per night, it stands as a tempting option. The St. Regis nearby also promises a luxurious stay.

As your boat arrives at the Westin’s dock, a Polynesian staff member greets guests with the melodic strumming of a ukulele. An immediate feeling of warmth envelops you as you’re escorted to reception via golf cart. Between the caressing breeze and the endless sight of emerald waters, this moment felt tear-jerkingly beautiful.

Enjoying the Local Experience

One of Bora Bora’s undeniable highlights is its tranquillity. Spending time lounging on our private bungalow’s deck, I realized how refreshing it felt to have no agenda. Simply witnessing the sun dance across the water was enough to justify our journey.

Should you seek adventure, the region offers phenomenal snorkeling. On certain days, visibility is extraordinary, revealing an underwater world of colorful coral, playful stingrays, and even schools of vibrant tropical fish. For the thrill-seekers, black-tipped sharks circling nearby can elevate the adrenaline!

Another gem was the glass floor panels in our bungalow. Imagine sipping coffee while watching fish glide gracefully underneath! It sparked both surprise and laughter when my son Gage attempted to catch a fish right off our deck. Naturally, he threw it back — no one wants to disturb the delicate balance of paradise.

Exploring the Wonders of Bora Bora

Diving is a must for many visitors, and while my husband and daughter took the plunge, I relished the serenity of our surroundings. Notably, evenings were devoid of pesky bugs, making outdoor dining utterly pleasant. The remoteness of Bora Bora means insects are a rare sight, allowing you to enjoy meals under the stars without swatting away unwanted guests.

What to Pack

Packing for Bora Bora is quite straightforward thanks to its perpetually warm weather. Think minimal: light swimsuits, stylish cover-ups, and breezy dresses that transition perfectly from day to evening. The Miramar Skirt by Rag & Bone, for example, is a chic choice, as it combines comfort with polished elegance.

Evenings call for semi-formal attire, such as a striking blue Saylor dress that will certainly catch flattering attention. Versatile pieces like a halter top and wide-leg trousers can be worn separately for different looks. Also, timeless prints like polka dots transcend seasons, making them a staple for effortless styling in Bora Bora.

Is Bora Bora Worth It?

Living in the majestic mountains of Telluride, Colorado, I’m often captivated by the grandeur and overwhelming beauty of towering peaks. However, Bora Bora offers a uniquely different experience; it doesn’t just overwhelm; it rejuvenates your spirit. The locals, bursting with friendliness, radiate a spirit that lifts your mood. The waters are so mesmerizingly blue — a hue likened to Gatorade by my daughter — that it feels almost otherworldly amidst the striking backdrop of Mount Otemanu.

I often found myself questioning the very notion of paradise — places like Bora Bora serve as a reminder of nature’s beauty and its rare ability to evoke heartfelt emotions. The vibrant and welcoming atmosphere coupled with stunning landscapes assures that a trip to Bora Bora is not merely a vacation; it’s an experience that unearths a newfound sense of wonder.

If you’re considering this slice of heaven, I entirely vote yes. Go, roam, and immerse yourself in one of the earth’s most beautiful creations.
