While always-on displays have attempted to take their place, they lack the subtlety and discreet charm of the much-loved notification LED.

HiLight: A Contemporary Twist on Nostalgia

In response to user demand, Google reintroduced the notification LED concept in its Pixel 11 Pro series, aptly naming it “HiLight.” Nestled within the camera bar of the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold models, HiLight aims to blend retro functionality with modern design. The LED array emits gentle, colorful lights to notify users of messages and AI status updates—on paper, an elegant solution.

The Beauty of Design

Visually, HiLight is a significant upgrade over traditional notification LEDs. When inactive, the lights seamlessly integrate into the sleek camera module, giving the back of the device a minimalist appearance. However, once activated, these diffused lights catch one’s attention without being overwhelmingly bright. Featuring customizable alerts for apps like Google Phone and WhatsApp, users can assign different colors for different contacts. A glowing red for a boss’s call? Yes, please!

The Smart Integration with AI Assistants

One of HiLight’s standout features is its integration with Google’s Gemini assistant. The Major Flaw: Location, Location, Location

Despite all of HiLight’s impressive features, a significant flaw looms large: its placement on the back of the phone. Most users, myself included, typically place their phones face-up on desks or nightstands. This design choice essentially makes HiLight invisible during those moments when it’s most needed.

A Use Case Misstep

Unfortunately, Google’s decision seems to overlook some fundamental smartphone usage patterns. Notifications on the back of the phone can easily go unnoticed unless the device is face down—a habit that many users aren’t likely to adopt. When a phone placed screen-side-up vibrates or lights up, the notification can easily be missed, defeating the purpose of having a visual alert system in the first place.

Compounding the Issue with Accessories

Things get even trickier when you consider the Pixel 11 series’s compatibility with Qi 2.2 magnetic charging accessories. These accessories are designed to elevate the phone for easier viewing. If users rely on such accessories while enjoying the benefits of HiLight, the feature becomes even less effective, rendering it merely decorative.

A Better Location for HiLight

Given the functionality of HiLight, there are certainly better options for its placement. Ideally, the notification light could shine through at the top of the screen or surround the power button. It provides not just notifications but also interaction feedback that could enhance the user experience. Yet, the placement of these lights is counterintuitive. A feature designed to enhance communication should also be intuitive and seamlessly fit within user habits. For now, while HiLight demonstrates potential, it runs the risk of remaining merely an overlooked gimmick rather than a genuine enhancement to the Pixel lineup.
