A few snippets of digital ephemera and IRL recommendations I’ve enjoyed lately…
1/ This month, VANITY FAIR has a profile on FASHION PEOPLE’S LAUREN SHERMAN. Fashion People is a Puck newsletter and a podcast that’s renowned for its ‘scoops’ regarding which new creative director is set to take over at high-end fashion houses. However, the juicy tidbits often blend into gossipy fluff. While I don’t subscribe to Puck, I find the podcast entertaining, particularly when guests like frenemies Derek Blasberg and Jacob Gallagher bring a dose of drama. The notion of Sherman being a fashion oracle is amusing; she primarily excels in articulating her love for brands like Phoebe Philo, Charvet, and The Row, while chuckling off her cursory familiarity with others—referring to Studio Nicholson as merely a ‘mood board brand’ is simply delightful! 2/ Fashion buys that caught my eye. Arket’s off-white utility trousers* have piqued my interest—they resemble denim but boast a lighter construction. For those unable to nab the Phoebe Philo Utility Jeans, these may serve as a stellar substitute. Though the Homme Girls tuxedo shirt has flown off the shelves, I’ve found that pairing a tuxedo shirt with tailored long shorts* delivers a chic look for late summer evenings. Imagine this ensemble accented by black formal socks and patent-leather dress shoes*; effortlessly elegant.
3/ SIMON MILLS’ Substack carries a whimsical take on hotel room etiquette. Is it appropriate to make off with cocktail swizzle sticks, bath towels, or umbrellas from hotel rooms? Mills offers his insights, and I must admit to having “liberated” a delightful ‘newspaper bag’ from a hotel door in Mumbai’s Sun & Sand Hotel, which has since transformed into my go-to short errand bag for avocado and half a pint of milk. The image below showcases this cheeky souvenir.
4/ Two beauty recommendations worth knowing about. I recently discovered Bob Beauté’s clear brow gel at Harvey Nichols (R.I.P). Let me tell you, it surpasses both the MAC Pro Locked Brow Gel and the Blink Brow Bar Clear Brow Gloss. This product is tiny yet comes with a firm brush that ensures no flaking while creating a naturally groomed, non-crispy look. While Harvey Nichols’ online shopping has sadly ceased, you can still find this gem at their Knightsbridge location or online. My other find, available at most retailers, is the Ole Henriksen Peptide Lip Treatment* in Grenada Guava—this sheer coral lip treatment provides hydration and just a hint of color, perfect for everyday wear. I bought mine from Boots, using it like a balm throughout the day.
5/ EDWIN HEATHCOTE shares a brilliant piece in the FT about the dearth of color in contemporary architecture. I came across the Judge Business School in Cambridge, designed by John Outram in 1991. This place is a vibrant post-modern wonderland, bursting with hues that feel like stepping into a delightful toy town. What lucky students have access to such an inspiring environment!
