Donald Trump ‘very angry’ with Vladimir Putin over ceasefire negotiations

Donald Trump expressed his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over failed ceasefire negotiations in Ukraine. The US president vowed to impose a 50% tariff on countries buying Russian oil if Putin did not agree to a ceasefire, stating, “If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault… I am going to put secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia.” This marks a shift in Trump’s approach towards Putin and Russia, with the White House yet to comment.

Trump’s tough stance on Russia came after concerns from European leaders that he was too friendly with Putin during ceasefire negotiations. Trump’s recent interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have been scrutinized, as he has demanded concessions while submitting to Putin’s demands. This change in tone seems to signal a new direction in US-Russian relations and puts pressure on Moscow to act.

In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump expressed anger and disappointment with Putin’s criticism of Zelensky. Trump emphasized the importance of a strong US response if Russia fails to comply with a ceasefire, threatening significant tariffs on Russian oil and other products entering the US. Zelensky condemned Russia’s actions and called for a united response from global partners.

Despite his frustration with Putin, Trump mentioned maintaining a good relationship with the Russian leader but warned of further economic sanctions if necessary. Secondary tariffs could be imposed on countries continuing to trade with Russia, with China and India being major buyers. Trump also hinted at a potential third term in office and reiterated threats against Iran if it did not cooperate on a nuclear deal.
