Thrills and Triumphs: NSAC 2026 College Basketball Quarterfinals Highlights
The excitement surrounding the NSAC 2026 College Basketball Campus Tour has reached a fever pitch following the Round of 16 games held at the UPHSD Gymnasium in Las Piñas. Four schools—San Beda University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Ateneo de Manila University, and Far Eastern University—secured their spots in the Quarterfinals, showcasing skill, determination, and thrilling gameplay.
San Beda University: The Red Lions Roar Again
San Beda University, the defending NCAA champions, demonstrated their power by finishing atop Group D with an impressive 3-0 record. Their Round of 16 game against the fourth seed from Group A, Lyceum of the Philippines, culminated in a hard-fought 67-61 victory. From the onset, the Red Lions took command, setting the tone early in the fourth quarter. Despite a valiant push by Lyceum, sparked by players Omar Gordon and Renz Villegas, San Beda weathered the storm with crucial inside baskets from Bismarck Lina and JC Bonzalida.
Key to their success was the ability to secure crucial rebounds and execute timely defensive plays that allowed them to maintain a comfortable lead. Despite one last surge from Lyceum, highlighted by Matthew Rubico’s late-game free throws and a three-pointer that brought the game within six, San Beda held strong to seal their victory.
Daniel Marcelo emerged as the star of the game, leading the Lions with 15 points, while Zedjay Etulle added a solid 11 points, including three critical three-pointers and four rebounds. For the Pirates, Rubico finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Letran Knights: Strong Performance Against the Altas
Setting themselves up for a challenging Quarterfinals clash against San Beda, Letran topped the host team University of Perpetual Help with a solid 78-64 victory. The game was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging leads until late in the fourth. Aaron Buensalida’s three-pointer proved to be a pivotal moment that ignited Letran’s late-game surge.
Despite the Altas’ efforts led by Jericho Cristino and Jim Corpuz, Letran’s timely shooting from Lorge Gammad and composed plays from Manalili propelled them to victory. Gammad’s 23 points were instrumental in breaking the game open, while Manalili contributed a commendable double-double of 11 points and 10 assists, guiding his team in both scoring and playmaking.
Mark Gojo Cruz led the Altas in a tough loss, finishing with 17 points, showcasing his determination to keep his team competitive.
Ateneo Blue Eagles: A High-Scoring Affair
The Ateneo Blue Eagles also advanced confidently, overcoming Mapúa University with a thrilling 91-83 win. The Blue Eagles, who finished second in Group A, faced a spirited comeback attempt from the Cardinals. Trailing by 16 points entering the fourth quarter, Mapúa rallied behind Cyrus Cuenco, who was a standout performer with 26 points.
However, Ateneo countered effectively with key contributions from their balanced roster. Jared Bahay and Divine Adili provided vital baskets, while late free throws by Kieffer Alas sealed the deal for the Blue Eagles. Michael Asoro led Ateneo’s scoring with 12 points, supported by a harmonious team effort where multiple players reached double figures.
Cuenco’s relentless performance was not enough to secure victory for Mapúa, despite him being a dominant force on the court.
Fortifying the Tamaraws: FEU’s Unbeaten Run
Far Eastern University (FEU) continued its unbeaten streak in the tournament, securing a decisive 100-77 victory over San Sebastian College-Recoletos. Topping Group C with a perfect record, FEU displayed a remarkable offensive force led by Mohamed Konateh, who achieved an impressive double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 25 rebounds.
The Tamaraws demonstrated their depth, with Janrey Pasaol and Jorick Bautista both contributing 17 points, underscoring the team’s well-rounded attack. Their ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities set them apart as they look forward to meeting the winner of the Green Archers and Blazers in the Quarterfinals.
