Bajaj Dominates July Three-Wheeler Sales; Mahindra Tops Electric Segment

The Surge of Electric Three-Wheelers in India: A Transformative Shift

In a remarkable turning point for India’s automotive landscape, nearly one in every two three-wheelers registered in July 2026 was electric. According to data from VAHAN, electric vehicles (EVs) comprised 48.6 percent of total retail registrations, marking a significant leap towards electrification in the industry. Total three-wheeler registrations ascended by 26.4 percent year-on-year, amounting to 86,580 units as compared to 68,501 the previous year. This growth was primarily fueled by a staggering 84.3 percent increase in electric registrations, which reached 42,065 units, while traditional fuel-powered three-wheelers saw a slight decline of 2.6 percent, recording 44,515 units.

Uday Narang, Chairman and Co-founder of Omega Seiki Mobility, commented on this monumental shift, stating, “The July retail data marks an important milestone for India’s three-wheeler industry. Nearly one in every two three-wheelers sold today is electric, reflecting the compelling economics of EVs for commercial operators.” He further noted that as charging infrastructure, financing options, and product reliability improve, the trend towards electrification will gain even more momentum across various applications.

Legacy Players Hold Their Ground

The competitive landscape remains vibrant, with established manufacturers maintaining their lead in the overall three-wheeler market. Bajaj Auto held its position firmly with 41,998 retail registrations, followed by Mahindra Last Mile Mobility at 13,455 units and Piaggio Vehicles at 9,134 registrations. TVS Motor secured the fourth spot with 6,752 registrations, while Atul Auto rounded out the top five.

The Electric Battle: Mahindra vs. Bajaj

The contest for dominance in the electric three-wheeler segment is heating up. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility emerged as the frontrunner, achieving 12,848 registrations, just slightly ahead of Bajaj Auto, which tallied 11,974 registrations. Notably, Bajaj showcased impressive growth, with electric registrations climbing 55 percent year-on-year, in comparison to Mahindra’s growth of 41.9 percent. This narrowing gap—now at just 874 registrations, down from 1,327 a year earlier—illustrates the intensifying competition within the EV market.

TVS Motor continued to solidify its position, becoming the third-largest producer of electric three-wheelers with 4,123 registrations, reflecting a remarkable 82.5 percent annual growth. Meanwhile, Piaggio maintained its status as the fourth largest player in the electric segment with 1,426 registrations, as niche manufacturers and startups continued to expand across both L3 e-rickshaw and L5 electric auto categories.

Internal Combustion Engines: Still the Majority

Despite the surging popularity of electric models, conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) three-wheelers are still holding strong in the market. Bajaj remains the undisputed leader in this category, with 30,024 registrations, followed by Piaggio at 7,708 and TVS Motor at 2,629. Mahindra, however, appears to be pivoting towards electric mobility, with only 607 ICE registrations recorded.

A Market on the Cusp of Transformation

Hemal Thakkar, Senior Director and Senior Practice Leader at Crisil Intelligence, forecasted that the overall market would approach the 90,000-unit benchmark in July. While the actual retail registrations fell slightly short at 86,580 units, Thakkar’s insights highlighted the prevailing trends. He emphasized that the ongoing electrification is becoming the primary driver of industry growth, propelled by favorable operating economics, reduced running costs, and increasing adoption across both passenger and cargo applications.

Thakkar further projected that electric vehicles are poised to take the lead in passenger three-wheeler retail sales, with penetration rates expected to rise to between 51-53 percent. In the cargo segment, EV penetration is anticipated to exceed 32 percent, indicating a broader acceptance of electric mobility across various commercial applications.

As India embraces this transformative shift in its three-wheeler segment, the overarching theme is clear: electric mobility is not just on the rise; it’s set to redefine the very fabric of transportation in the country.
