‘Frenzied, chaotic mess’: Fears grow over spread of disease after deadly Libya floods | World News

The aid effort in the flooded city of Derna in eastern Libya has significantly increased in the past 48 hours, but the situation still remains chaotic. While more people are on the ground providing assistance, there is a frenzy to prevent the spread of disease. Groups have been distributing masks and gloves due to concerns about the decomposing corpses spreading disease. The water is heavily contaminated, and many parts of the city lack water and electricity. There have been criticisms of the slow and uncoordinated relief operation, which has led to an influx of teams and increased activity in the devastated city. Many teams are still searching for and recovering bodies of flood victims, with around 10,000 people still missing. Libyan National Army commandos have been aiding in the relief efforts but have faced criticism for their lack of substantial contribution. The unstable situation in Libya following the 2011 NATO-backed military campaign has created various problems, including competing militias and a civil war. The Islamic State took control of Derna in 2014, and General Khalifa Haftar imposed a siege on the city to defeat the militants. However, residents claim it was a tribal anti-Haftar group that reclaimed the city. General Saddam Haftar, the youngest son of Khalifa Haftar, is seen as his successor and is overseeing the disaster response committee and relief efforts. However, he was reluctant to discuss the need for international aid. The collapse of two dams during Storm Daniel has caused widespread devastation and is blamed on poor maintenance over the past decade. Despite criticism, General Saddam Haftar denied any neglect or wrongdoing on behalf of the eastern power base.
