Mystery drones spotted over New Jersey – and authorities have ‘no clue’ who is flying them | US News

Reports of large drones flying over New Jersey and New York City in recent weeks have caused concern, as the operators remain unidentified.

The drones, measuring six feet in diameter, have been observed flying at night, sometimes with their lights off, sparking worry among residents and officials.

Initially spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal and over president-elect Donald Trump’s New Jersey golf course last month, there have been numerous night flights since then, with an increase in sightings in recent days. However, some officials suggest that some objects may have been mistaken for drones when they were actually planes.

The FBI is currently investigating the situation and has requested any videos, photos, or information from residents.

While the drones have been primarily seen in New Jersey, there have also been sightings in New York City and parts of Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia.

Despite the national attention, authorities have emphasized that the drones do not appear to pose a public safety threat.

Following a briefing by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday, New Jersey assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia stated that the drones appeared to be operated by professionals rather than hobbyists due to their size. Republican assemblyman Erik Peterson, who also attended the DHS briefing, mentioned the lack of information on the operators of the drones.

Two Republican congressmen from the Jersey Shore area, Representatives Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have called for the military to intervene and shoot down the drones, with the latter suggesting on Fox News that they may be originating from an “Iranian mothership”. However, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh has refuted these claims, stating that the drones are not linked to any foreign entity or adversary.

While drone usage is legal in New Jersey for recreational and commercial purposes, operators must adhere to local and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Many local politicians are advocating for stricter regulations on drone operators, with some proposing a temporary ban on drone flights in the state.

A resident of Succasunna, New Jersey, James Edwards, reported sightings of drones flying over his neighborhood since last month, expressing unease due to the unknown nature of the situation. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has assured residents that the issue is being taken seriously, acknowledging their frustrations and urging patience for a thorough investigation.
