AUBURN, Ala. — Pastor Carl McKay shares a long history with the Broome family of Plant City, Fla. From the early days of the Broome family, McKay has been around to witness their journey.
“I still remember the first time I saw John (Broome) and Julie (Murray) holding hands when they were just 13 years old,” McKay recalled. “I told them to stop, saying they were too young for that kind of stuff.”
Over the years, McKay has offered advice to the family, whether asked for or not. He even once advised John that his son Johni had a bright future in basketball and should focus on that instead of football. The Broome family has been part of McKay’s congregation at St. Luke Independent Church for 20 years. Recently, McKay shared with the congregation a story about a curious child who questioned the classic Sunday school lesson of “David and Goliath.”
The child turned out to be 9-year-old Johni Broome, who is now known as a standout college basketball player for the top-ranked Auburn Tigers. Despite being overlooked by many early on in his career, Broome has risen to prominence, much like the biblical character he questioned in Sunday school.
“He’s not only an exceptional basketball player but also a role model for our community,” McKay said. “His impact goes beyond the basketball court.”
Broome’s success on the basketball court is attributed to his strong foundation in life. He remains grounded in his faith, seeking guidance from McKay and the Auburn team chaplain, Jeremy Napier. Broome’s dedication to his spiritual beliefs is reflected in his tattoos and his involvement in weekly discussions with the Tigers’ “aura group.”
Despite his success in basketball, Broome remains humble and grateful for the support of his family and community. He credits his family for instilling in him the values that have helped shape his career. His journey from a relatively unknown high school player to a national player of the year candidate is a testament to his hard work and determination.
