In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, India cemented their status as a powerhouse in men’s hockey by finishing the league stage of the Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 with a perfect record. The Indian team showcased their potential by decimating South Korea with an impressive 8-0 victory at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar. This emphatic win marks India’s fifth successive triumph in the tournament.
Individual Brilliance: The Goals that Made the Difference
The scoreline was bolstered by several standout performances, particularly from Dilpreet Singh, who netted two goals at the eighth and 40th minutes. Not to be outdone, Jugraj Singh, captain Harmanpreet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sukhjeet Singh, Sanjay, and Angad Bir Singh each contributed to the scoring frenzy. With this victory, India is all set to face Korea again in the semi-finals, which will take place in Mohali.
A Quick Start: Three Goals in the First Quarter
The foundations for victory were laid early on as India blitzed South Korea with three quick goals in the first quarter. The crowd at the stadium, buoyed by the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, witnessed a thrilling performance. The excitement began when Sukhjeet saw his backhand attempt saved by Korean goalkeeper Kim Jaehyeon in just the fourth minute.
Dilpreet broke the deadlock merely four minutes later. He scored by finishing a well-crafted aerial pass from Jugraj with a deft backhand shot. The Indian momentum continued to build with another goal in the 11th minute. Captain Harmanpreet’s penalty corner was saved, but the quick-thinking Vishnukant Singh capitalized on the rebound and assisted Jugraj for the second goal. Harmanpreet himself added a third goal from a penalty corner in the 15th minute, putting him atop the tournament scoring chart with nine goals.
Defensive Resilience: Pathak Keeps Korea at Bay
Despite a somewhat intimidating onslaught from India, Korea found their footing in the second quarter. Their best chance materialized into several penalty corners, but the Indian defense held firm. Notably, goalkeeper Krishan Pathak made a remarkable one-on-one save against Son Dain in the 27th minute, showcasing the depth of talent within India’s lineup.
While India could not add to their score before half-time, the defensive strategy proved effective, keeping Korea at bay and ensuring the score remained at 3-0 heading into the break.
Second Half Surge: Four Goals After the Break
With a clear intent to seal the match, India exhibited an elevated level of urgency right from the start of the third quarter. The goal-fest continued with a penalty-corner variation that saw Harmanpreet pass to Jugraj. Although the Korean goalkeeper saved the initial attempt, Shilanand Lakra pounced on the rebound to make it 4-0 just a minute later.
The Indian team was relentless, with Sukhjeet deflecting a shot from Aditya Arjun Lalage for the fifth goal in the 34th minute, and Sanjay reacting first to score the sixth after a saved shot from Dilpreet. The latter finalized his brace in the 40th minute, capitalizing on an aerial ball from Harmanpreet to extend the lead to 7-0.
Although the match pace slowed in the final quarter, India kept control. Korea held more possession but struggled to create clear chances. The closing seconds saw Angad Bir Singh score India’s final goal, sealing the 8-0 victory.
