The Israeli military is conducting a thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of aid workers by its forces in Gaza, as stated by an Israeli government spokesman in an interview with Sky News.
According to David Mencer, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fired at a suspicious convoy from a distance on 23 March near Rafah, resulting in the deaths of fifteen emergency workers.
When questioned about an independent investigation, Mr Mencer emphasized that Israel is not afraid and highlighted previous instances of Hamas using ambulances for illicit purposes.
Regarding the IDF’s actions, Mr Mencer reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and will be comprehensive, with no intention of concealing any information.
Footage released over the weekend depicted the harrowing moment the aid workers came under fire, prompting the Palestine Red Crescent Society to demand an independent inquiry into the incident.
Additionally, the IDF reported that preliminary findings identified six of the deceased as Hamas terrorists, and all claims related to the event will be thoroughly investigated and presented for review.
Concerns were raised about the shooting taking place in a combat zone, but an investigation by Sky News debunked this assertion.
Mr Mencer also discussed the recent deportation of Labour MPs from Israel, attributing their treatment to anti-Israel sentiments and actions.
He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to defending itself and accused the MPs of spreading false information and supporting sanctions against Israel.
Both MPs released a joint statement expressing astonishment at being denied entry and advocating for the ability of parliamentarians to observe the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned the MPs’ detention and refusal of entry, calling it unacceptable and counterproductive.
