Less than three months after being elected as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, young political activist David Hogg is embarking on a new project that may upset some fellow Democrats. He plans to spend millions of dollars to oust Democratic members of Congress in primary elections next year.
Hogg, 25, who gained prominence after the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., believes the party needs to eliminate a “culture of seniority politics” that allows older, less effective lawmakers to remain in office during a crisis.
Through his organization, Leaders We Deserve, Hogg intends to intervene in primaries in reliably Democratic districts as part of a $20 million effort to elect younger leaders and take a more assertive stance against President Trump.
Acknowledging potential backlash for his dual roles as a party official and a leader in the ousting effort, Hogg stated that he expects a “smear campaign” against him to discredit his reputation and deter his actions.
