Satellite data indicates that the area affected by wildfires in the UK this year has already surpassed the total area burnt in any single year over the past decade.

According to the Global Wildfire Information System, over 29,200 hectares (292 sq km or 113 sq miles) have been burnt thus far, which exceeds the previous record of 28,100 hectares set in 2019.

Researchers attribute this spike to the extended dry and sunny weather experienced in March and early April, which created ideal conditions for extensive burning.

Wildfires are common in early spring across the UK, primarily due to the presence of dead or dormant vegetation from winter that dries out rapidly.

Although recent wetter weather has significantly reduced fire activity, the record levels of previous fires persist.

Data from the Global Wildfire Information System includes only those fires larger than approximately 30 hectares (0.3 sq km).

Since the year's start, over 80 such fires have been recorded across the UK.

While most fires are ignited by human activity, favorable weather conditions can significantly enhance their spread.

"We experienced an unusually dry and sunny March," stated Will Lang, head of risk and resilience services at the Met Office.

"This followed a wet autumn and winter, which can increase the vegetation that acts as fuel for any fire."

A lack of rainfall during March and April plays a crucial role in fostering conditions conducive to fires.

"As vegetation emerges from winter dormancy, it becomes very dry and lacks moisture," explained Guillermo Rein, a fire science professor at Imperial College London.

"There is a phase in spring before water is absorbed into living tissue where the vegetation is highly flammable."

Additionally, the BBC has utilized satellite imagery to highlight two of the major burns this year.

In Galloway Forest Park, located in south-west Scotland, an estimated 65 sq km were burnt, accounting for nearly a quarter of the UK's total.

Satellite detection has also noted fires on the Isle of Arran, the Isle of Bute, and the Isle of Skye in Scotland, along with incidents in the Mourne Mountains of south-east Northern Ireland, all occurring in early April.

These early-season fires—primarily grass, heath, and shrub burns—have placed immense pressure on fire services, yet their ecological consequences can vary.

Smaller, lower-intensity fires may not necessarily harm long-term vegetation health.

Certain plant species, such as heather, thrive in fire-prone ecosystems. However, increasingly frequent or severe fires may hinder their natural regrowth.

Some scientists express concern regarding the typical second peak of the fire season, which arises later in the year amid high temperatures and dried vegetation.

"My primary concern is the summer months," stated Prof. Rein, noting that "although there are fewer wildfires, they tend to be more severe and can lead to significant damages."

"You might contend with a hundred smaller wildfires across the country that can be dealt with in one day, or a singular summer wildfire that takes a week to contain and can endanger homes."

The recent widespread fires do not guarantee a busy fire season this summer.

Nonetheless, scientists anticipate an increase in weather patterns suitable for extreme wildfires due to climate change, despite annual variations.

A study from the Met Office indicated that the extreme "fire weather" conditions that fueled the destructive fires of July 2022 were at least six times more likely due to climate change caused by human activities.

Changes in land use are also significant in influencing fire risks.

"It seems to be a consensus that we are likely to experience more fires, and potentially more severe fires, due to climate change," remarked Rory Hadden, a senior lecturer in fire investigation at the University of Edinburgh.

"We must be ready for this to become a regular occurrence."
