Anyone sincerely seeking to avoid a repeat of the COVID-19 pandemic faces two crucial mysteries that demand urgent answers. The first mystery is clear: Where did SARS-CoV-2 come from? The second, perhaps more perplexing, question prompts deeper inquiry: If experts are as confident as they claim that the pandemic originated from zoonosis, why are numerous individuals, institutions, and countries so hesitant to conduct a thorough investigation into its origins? While the first mystery focuses exclusively on the origins of the virus, the second raises concerns about the systemic issues within our scientific and regulatory frameworks.

The Lab Leak or Zoonotic Transmission?

If the origin of SARS-CoV-2 were a lab leak, it might have resulted from a freak machinery malfunction or an error made by an individual—an event so isolated that it could be downplayed. However, the lack of investigation into simpler, cost-effective experiments reveals a systemic issue that may reflect a widespread reluctance to face uncomfortable truths. This presents a more pressing dilemma than the origin itself.

At the forefront of overlooked questions sits the intriguing case of raccoon dogs. Currently, raccoon dogs are identified as the leading candidates for the intermediate host—an animal species that may have transmitted COVID-19 to humans in Wuhan. Intriguingly, only one publication has ever thoroughly tested raccoon dogs for their susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 (Freuling et al., 2020.), and that study was limited in scope, examining merely nine animals using an incorrect strain. The implications are vast—a failure to test the original strain leaves significant gaps in our understanding.

The Disconnect Between Funding and Inquiry

It is astounding that billions have been invested in assessing global viral emergence risks while an actual pandemic’s origin is left largely unexamined. Individuals should be particularly attentive to those who dismiss the possibility of determining where SARS-CoV-2 originated—a sentiment not consistent with the ongoing funding of extensive viral research.

As a virologist focused on these origin questions, I often feel compelled to seek answers directly from peers at scientific conferences. The need for open discourse within the scientific community remains profoundly critical, especially as misinformation and disinterest threaten to obscure important issues.

A Tour of Virology Conferences

In early 2023, I planned to attend three major virology conferences in Europe, with multifaceted goals. Firstly, I aimed to share our own theories regarding the origins of COVID-19 and Ebola 2014. Ironically, the experts tasked with investigating COVID-19’s origins appeared profoundly uninformed about key aspects of the debate. Questions regarding the potential of raccoon dogs—or even other animals in the Huanan market—to transmit SARS-CoV-2 were met with dismissive, speculative responses. The scientific literature overwhelmingly supports the idea that without adequate testing of the original strain—specifically, the D614 variant—the credibility of zoonotic theories remains questionable.

The Limitations of Current Research Paradigms

Despite the ongoing debate over COVID-19’s origins, much of the existing discourse curtails critical discussions regarding the origins of zoonotic diseases. The idea of raccoon dogs as viable intermediate hosts merits more profound scientific exploration. One unanswered question remains paramount: Why are these investigations not being pursued? The reluctance to test the original strain on raccoon dogs leaves the market origin hypothesis hanging by a thread.

The Role of Funding and Influence in Science

Professor Volker Thiel and his collaborators, whose works have been fundamental in shaping the virulence narratives of SARS-CoV-2, wield a substantial influence. Their reluctance to explore alternative origins only perpetuates a cycle of inquiry that fails to encompass the broader, pressing questions of our time.

Reconciling Scientific Discourse with the Scrutiny of Origins

Navigating the complex landscape of virology conferences further underscores a critical point: the scientific community must actively engage in open discourse around sensitive topics. The prevailing culture of censorship not only stifles inquiry but also limits the potential for breakthroughs in understanding pandemics.

The struggles I faced in voicing these essential questions compel us to reflect on the future of science. Are we moving toward a more transparent and inquisitive scientific landscape, or are we resigned to an echo chamber, where dissenting voices are clipped? As we seek answers to the questions surrounding COVID-19’s origins, we must strive for transparency, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
