Loud! OOH Calls for Disclosure Standards in Prize Draw and Competition Advertising
London, UK – In a move aimed at enhancing transparency in the marketing of prize draws and competitions, independent out-of-home (OOH) agency Loud! OOH has issued four key disclosure requests to UK media owners. With this sector expected to amplify its outdoor advertising efforts, particularly as it is projected to capture an astounding £1.3 billion annually from UK consumers, ensuring clarity in advertising becomes imperative.
As the outdoor advertising landscape becomes increasingly saturated with prize draw promotions, Loud! OOH is advocating for a set of voluntary disclosure standards that all media owners should adopt for these types of bookings. The proposed guidelines include the following:
- Free Entry Disclosure: The free entry route must be prominently displayed on the ad itself rather than relegated to the fine print of terms and conditions.
- Odds and Limits: Advertisers should state the odds of winning or total entry cap alongside any advertised prizes to ensure potential participants have a clear understanding of their chances.
- Cash Alternatives: Should a physical prize be depicted, any cash alternative must also be disclosed transparently.
- Site Screening: Advertising sites should be vetted for their proximity to schools and colleges, applying the same standards as the CAP gambling rules.
The burgeoning prize draw and competition sector has only recently begun to establish itself formally. The UK government initiated a Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators on May 20, 2026. Just a couple of months later, in July, about fifty operators united to form the Prize Competition Council, the inaugural trade association for this industry. Stats from research commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport reveal a fascinating trend: around 7.4 million adults in the UK participated in a prize draw or competition over the past year, collectively spending an estimated £1.3 billion. This is significant, especially considering that many operators are not under the jurisdiction of the Gambling Act, granting them the freedom to heavily invest in advertising as they expand their reach.
For Loud! OOH, outdoor advertising stands out as an ideal medium for this sector. The primary barrier that prize draw operators face is often consumer trust; unlike paid social media that delivers messages behind the privacy of screens without accountability, outdoor billboards offer public visibility, transparency, and credibility. As potential customers can see advertisements displayed by established media owners, the assurance grows stronger, encouraging these operators to embrace outdoor advertising more confidently.
Jamie Roberts, founder of Loud! OOH, emphasizes the significance of clear communication in outdoor advertising. “If the free entry route is the only reason a prize draw poster is legal, it should be readable from the top deck of a bus, not buried three clicks into a terms page,” he asserts. He further notes, “Out-of-home has arrived late to discussions surrounding gambling and high fat, salt and sugar advertising, and each time the stance has been set by others once the posters are already up. The medium thrives on being visible and accountable for its content, which plays a pivotal role in earning consumer trust.”
Loud! OOH has a history of executing impactful outdoor campaigns focused on public comprehension rather than just direct responses. For instance, their “The Living Room” campaign, aimed at flood risk awareness, utilized a 3D anamorphic digital EcoVan in Manchester. Besides advocating for better advertising standards, the agency also offers resources to help potential advertisers understand billboard pricing across UK formats, including the costs associated with advertising in the London Underground.
