The Lab Leak Hypothesis
The idea that COVID-19 may have emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology has gained ground. Dr. Ebright points out that a credible forensic investigation should prioritize transparency, allowing access to essential records, samples, and personnel at key facilities like the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and the Wuhan Center for Disease Control.
When discussing the potential for the virus to have leaked from the WIV, Dr. Ebright stands firm: “This cannot and should not be dismissed.” Experts like Dr. Steven Quay, another signatory of the Open Letter, estimate a 99.8% probability of a lab-related origin.
As Dr. Ebright notes, current scientific data does not definitively favor either hypothesis—natural zoonotic spillover or laboratory accident. Both remain plausible explanations, with the evidence pointing equally toward natural origins and lab-related events.
