Ben’s Sports Blog: A Temporary Farewell

Goodbye for Now: A Back-to-School Reflection

As I prepare to fly back to Seattle University for my sophomore year this Monday, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia. This blog post is likely my last for a while, as I anticipate juggling classes, campus life, and perhaps the occasional late-night study session. But before diving into the new academic year, I want to share some thoughts on the current state of sports, especially the Bay Area teams.

Oakland Athletics: Wild-Card Hopefuls

The Oakland Athletics have made quite a splash this season, positioning themselves strongly for one of the two American League wild-card spots. As they embark on their final home series of the season, they find themselves sitting comfortably in the first wild-card position, two games ahead of both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians. It’s fascinating to note that despite their bullpen woes, which have included an astounding 29 blown saves—most in the American League—the A’s have managed to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Much of the credit for this is due to their starting rotation, which has risen to the occasion, taking pressure off their shaky bullpen. Notably, pitchers like Petit and Hendriks have been standout players, helping to keep the momentum going. Watching the A’s overpowering offense match up against either the Houston Astros or the New York Yankees in a wild-card game promises to be an exhilarating spectacle if they can secure that spot.

San Francisco Giants: A Legendary Farewell

In contrast to the A’s, the San Francisco Giants are poised to miss the playoffs this year, marking a bittersweet conclusion to legendary manager Bruce Bochy’s illustrious career. Recently reaching his 2000th career win, Bochy has added another accolade to his already impressive Hall of Fame credentials. However, the growing pains of this season have been evident, particularly in the decline of Buster Posey, who struggles to find his former hitting prowess post-hip surgery.

The Giants faced strong competition from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who snatched the NL West title for the seventh consecutive year. Yet, it’s not all doom and gloom for San Francisco. There is a glimmer of hope in their farm system, where promising young hitters are nurturing the franchise’s future aspirations.

Cal Football: A Mixed Bag

Switching gears to the college scene, the Cal Golden Bears football team boasts a thrilling 4-0 start, catching the attention of fans nationwide and making their way into the AP poll. Much of the team’s success can be attributed to an elite defense, anchored by middle linebacker Evan Weaver and a formidable secondary.

However, while the defense steals the spotlight, the offense—led by second-year quarterback Chase Garbers—has not shown significant improvement from the previous year. They managed a brilliant two-minute drill to upset UW a few weeks back, but a recent 23-point outing against a struggling North Texas defense raises concerns about their consistency.

Stanford’s Struggles: A Tough Start

Meanwhile, the Stanford Cardinal is having a rough go of it, currently sitting at a surprising 1-2 record. This poor performance can largely be attributed to a challenging schedule that kicked off against formidable opponents like Northwestern and USC, followed by a tough matchup against UCF.

NFL News: Injury and Intrigue

In the NFL, excitement is palpable with the San Francisco 49ers off to their first 2-0 start since 2012. The league is buzzing with drama as well; both Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger have faced significant injuries, leaving their respective teams scrambling for solutions. Additionally, the saga surrounding Antonio Brown continues to evolve, generating headlines with each passing day.

A Special Mention: Wesleyan Women’s Soccer Team

Lastly, I want to shine a light on my twin sister and her teammates on the Wesleyan University Women’s Soccer team. Starting strong at 3-1, they’ve already accomplished impressive feats, including an upset against the nationally ranked Williams College, the previous NCAA Division III champion. Their record is further highlighted by an explosive game where they scored the most goals in one match in program history. This weekend, they aim to keep the momentum going with back-to-back games against two NESCAC rivals.

As I pack my bags and wrap up my summer, it’s evident that exciting times lie ahead in both my academic journey and the sports world. Here’s to a fresh start!
